East Bench Community Master Plan Update
Th East Bench Community Master Plan was adopted in 1987. It is time to evaluate the plan to determine if it is meeting the current goals and values of the community. Additional information can be found at http://www.eastbenchmp.com/
Please help us shape the future of the East Bench neighborhood.
On this forum please feel free to add new ideas, or comment on what others have to say. Please keep things civil.

Please protect the historical integrity of our neighborhood. It is wonderful to live in this extraordinary place!
We all need to play (build and make additions) by the same rules. There could still be plenty of room for changes and improvements if we had some kind of regulation similar to LHD's.

I like the people in the neighborhood, the closeness to shops and the lovely architecture. I would change architecture that does fit the time period, is too large or high and too modern for the area

Please preserve Yalecrest as the ONLY neighborhood of its type in the state. Don't allow teardowns, poptops, bad remodels!
Yalecrest is a priceless community asset that should be stewarded for future generations. The City should more actively promote the many long-term economic and environmental benefits of historic preservation.

I live in the Yalecrest neighborhood, which is on the national register of historic places. This means it's valuable,SLC should preserve it.
Yalecrest National Register District should be designated a Salt Lake City Local Historic District to prevent teardowns of the historic homes. Greater emphasis should be placed on these treasures in our city and the City's Preservation Plan should be adopted and utilized.

Suggestions for reducing congestion and pollution include:
1. Better affordable, frequent mass transit options and park and ride locations along the East Bench.
2. Better and safer bicycle lanes or paths to Sugar House and University of Utah on Foothill and Parley’s. I think Sunnyside is fine with bike lines and 4 lanes of traffic from 1300 East to the Zoo.
3. Wider and better sidewalks with no cracks, holes, snow, ice, or untrimmed bushes and wind fall brush.
4. Less ugliness and more landscaping, similar to section from Sunnyside to 1300 South.
5. Remove parking from Foothill Blvd. There… more7 votes -
Multi-use off-street paths
Compared to other cities, SLC seriously lacks off-street paths that provide safe mobility for families, children, disabled, and causual bicyclists. I have suggested to incorporate Red Butte Trail to the East Bench masterplan at the open house (from Sunnyside Park to Red Butte Gardens). Now, looking around some more, I would also like to suggest adding an off-street path on the north side of Sunnyside and 800 S going from the mouth of Emigration canyon (at the Shoreline trailhead near the Zoo) all the way to 1300S, and even further west if possible. This would provide vastly improved accessibility for… more

We need better traffic flow to downtown. The "calmed" traffic and bike lanes are making travel slower and more dangerous for all.
The walkable/bike-able nature of our area is very appealing. But bikes should be accommodated without reducing lanes or slowing movement on major traffic arteries (i.e. 1300 East, Sunnyside Avenue, 400 South.) The reduced lanes push traffic to interior neighborhood streets while, ironically, increasing congestion on the narrowed arteries. The result is less safety for the bikes and decreased patronage for Salt Lake City retail establishments as many area residents opt to travel south to do their shopping. Let's put the bike lanes on the quieter streets and give the automobile traffic a smooth path to our Salt Lake City businesses,… more

The single improvement that would do most to beautify our environment would be to eliminate overhead utilities. The excuses given for not doing this are costs generated by the utilities themselves and have not been verified bu truly independent sources.
It haas taken generations to produce this unsightliness, it properly should take generations to eliminate them. Needed simply is a city ordinance to require new, remodeling and repair work on these facilities to follow those same rules required for University and other public work systems. If the citizen supported public agencies are required to place these facilities underground, it is… more15 votes -
This needs to be a complete community effort. Residents, businesses, schools everyone needs to voice positive improvements for all areas.
When we drive by a school crossing and there are no flags for the studends or walkers this needs as much attention as having the speed limits neighborhood friendly.

I value being able to walk to services, the historic character, our human-scale homes.
1300 East is primarily a residential and should not be viewed as the "solution" to the auto traffic issues in our neighborhoods. The changes to the traffic lanes now accommodate bicycles in a much safer way. We should explore the option of encouraging auto traffic on other minor arterials in the neighborhood so that auto traffic is more evenly dispersed. I hope that no one wants 1300 East to be a 700 East type of street, which would divide our neighborhood and only bring more congestion and pollution.

Foothill Drive is a great street to walk. The improvements I would make are the following:12make the west lane turn right only at 2300 East.
The merging traffic at 2300 is dangerous for both cars on Foothill Drive and cars turning into the Village from 2300 East
